AI in cybersecurity: Balancing automation and talent development

Managed service providers (MSPs) are increasingly looking to artificial intelligence to address the cybersecurity talent gap. While AI offers clear benefits in handling repetitive tasks and potentially reducing costs, experts caution that over-reliance on automation could inadvertently create a future skills shortage by eliminating traditional training grounds for junior professionals, with further coverage provided by Smarter MSP.

The integration of AI into cybersecurity operations presents a complex challenge for MSPs. While AI can absorb routine Security Operations Center (SOC) and help desk tasks, improving efficiency and lowering costs, this automation risks removing the foundational experience that junior analysts traditionally gain from reviewing numerous alerts. Yulia Plugatyreva, a Senior SOX and IT Auditor, warns that this could weaken the pipeline of experienced professionals in the long term.

To counter this, experts suggest redesigning entry-level roles to focus on reviewing AI decisions, investigating exceptions, and developing critical thinking skills. Jose Lejin P J, a Principal Member of Technical Staff at Salesforce, advocates for hiring individuals with adjacent IT experience, such as help desk or system administration, and providing clear development paths with hands-on training and dedicated time. AI's most valuable application lies in enriching alerts, gathering context, and drafting initial responses, but human oversight remains crucial for complex decisions, threat hunting, and client communication. Ultimately, the industry must focus on cultivating expertise through mentorship and structured career progression rather than solely relying on automation or traditional recruitment methods.
