General Motors has been sued by the Texas Attorney General's Office over the alleged unlawful gathering and sale of driver data from 1.5 million residents, SC Media reports.

Owners of GM vehicles from model year 2015 onwards have been lured to enroll in OnStar Smart Driver and other services to ensure activation of their cars' safety kit, only for their data to be unknowingly collected and peddled to insurance firms and other third-party organizations, according to the lawsuit. Such data was noted by the lawsuit to have been used by two third parties for driving score generation.

"Companies are using invasive technology to violate the rights of our citizens in unthinkable ways. Millions of American drivers wanted to buy a car, not a comprehensive surveillance system that unlawfully records information about every drive they take and sells their data to any company willing to pay for it," said Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
