Last-Minute Biden EO Reportedly Prompted By Chinese Cyberattacks

Biden May 2021 EO

Mandatory implementation of robust authentication and encryption across the U.S. government was reported by Bloomberg to be mulled by the Biden administration under a last-minute executive order (EO).

The proposed move follows sanctions imposed by the Treasury Department against Chinese firm Integrity Technology Group over its involvement in Flax Typhoon hacks, according to SC Media.

Under the EO proposal, U.S. private contractors working with the government would also be required to adopt encryption and user training best practices.

"In some instances, providers of software to the federal government commit to following cybersecurity practices, yet do not fix well-known exploitable vulnerabilities in their software, which puts the government at risk of compromise," said the draft report viewed by Bloomberg.
