BlackBerry Cylance, Chronicle Backstory: Cloud Security Analytics Integration Arrives

BlackBerry Cylance has integrated CylancePROTECT and CylanceOPTICS with Chronicle Backstory -- a Google Cloud-based security platform. The move essentially connects endpoint protection, threat detection, prevention and response solutions with a Google Cloud-based security analytics platform, according to a prepared statement.

The integrations enable CylancePROTECT and CylanceOPTICS partners and customers to identify threat triggers and indicators and correlate this information with Backstory's context panel, the companies said. In doing so, organizations can summarize and categorize threat intelligence.

Here's a bit more about each offering:

  • Backstory is a global security telemetry platform that helps organizations investigate security incidents and hunt for cyber threats. It is built on Google infrastructure and extracts signals from security telemetry to help organizations identify security issues and build threat intelligence.
  • CylancePROTECT uses artificial intelligence (AI) to provide continuous threat detection. It helps organizations detect and address cyber attacks before they begin, as well as prevents zero-day payloads from executing.
  • CylanceOPTICS delivers AI-based threat prevention and cyber attack mitigation. It promotes situational awareness to help organizations understand where threats persist and provides automated playbook-based response capabilities.

BlackBerry and Cylance: The Path Forward

BlackBerry is striving to make the most of its recent Cylance acquisition. The potential challenges include some inconsistent BlackBerry enterprise revenues coupled with some turnover in Cylance's business.

Still, Cylance "executed at or better than expectations" in the second quarter of fiscal year 2020, BlackBerry CEO John Chen said in a prepared statement.

Meanwhile, the Backstory integrations could help BlackBerry Cylance further accelerate its growth.

BlackBerry Cylance also continues to innovate on additional fronts. The company in July introduced the CylanceGUARD continuous threat prevention solution. BlackBerry Cylance also offers a partner program that enables MSSPs and solution providers to integrate the company's endpoint security solutions into their portfolios.
