VMware has acquired Octarine, which specializes in Kubernetes security and compliance, for an undisclosed sum. The company announced the acquisition at its Connect 2020 cybersecurity user and partner conference (which is being held virtually).

With the acquisition, VMware will integrate Octarine technology into the VMware Carbon Black Cloud, the company said. Octarine capabilities also will be integrated into the VMware Tanzu platform for Kubernetes.
The acquisition comes the same day that VMware launched a Next-Gen SOC Alliance to integrate SIEM and SOAR solutions with Carbonite's endpoint protection systems.
A Closer Look at Octarine
Octarine delivers continuous security and compliance across Kubernetes applications, the company stated. It provides the following Kubernetes solutions:
- Octarine Enterprise: Delivers continuous cloud-native security and compliance for multi-tenant, multi-cluster Kubernetes workloads.
- Octarine kube-scan: Provides an open-source security risk assessment tool that helps organizations evaluate the security posture of their Kubernetes clusters.
- Octarine Kubernetes Common Configuration Scoring System (KCCSS): Offers an open-source framework that rates the risk associated with Kubernetes workloads.
Together, VMware and Octarine will provide organizations with visibility into cloud-native environments, the companies stated. This ensures that organizations can use VMware and Octarine solutions to reduce the risks posed by security vulnerabilities and cyberattacks.
VMware and Octarine solutions also support runtime monitoring and control of Kubernetes workloads across hybrid environments, the companies indicated. In addition, the solutions allow organizations to create and enforce content-based policies to secure their sensitive data.
VMware Launches Next-Gen SOC Alliance
Along with its Octarine acquisition, VMware has launched a Next-Gen Security Operations Center (SOC) Alliance, which enables organizations to use the VMware Carbon Black Cloud in combination with security information and event management (SIEM) technologies from the following vendors:
- Exabeam
- Google Cloud's Chronicle
- IBM Security
- Splunk
- Sumo Logic
The Next-Gen SOC Alliance helps organizations automate and orchestrate their SOCs, VMware stated. It also provides organizations with context into security events and the ability to perform large-scale queries and remote remediation.
