Motorola Solutions to Acquire Mobile Access Control Provider Openpath

Motorola Solutions has announced plans to acquire Openpath Security, a mobile access control provider.

Updated Aug 5, 2021: Financial terms initially were not disclosed, but Motorola in a follow-up earnings statement said the Openpath deal was valued at $297 million.

Original July 14, 2021, Coverage: This is technology M&A deal number 417 that MSSP Alert and sister site ChannelE2E have covered so far in 2021. See all technology M&A deals for 2021 and 2020 listed here.

Openpath enables Motorola Solutions to consolidate video security and access control, Motorola Solutions CEO Greg Brown said. That way, Motorola Solutions can deliver solutions that allow organizations to use video and access control to secure physical entry points like never before.

Openpath Business Background

Openpath delivers a cloud-based mobile access control solution with remote management capabilities, the seller said. The solution allows organizations to leverage multi-factor authentication for contactless entry into buildings.

Also, Openpath offers an open API framework that allows users to integrate access control capabilities into a variety of systems, such as:

  • Safety and wellness
  • Tenant and visitor management
  • Video management
  • Identity services
  • Communication tools

Channel partners can leverage Openpath's access control and remote system management capabilities as well. Openpath offers a program that provides channel partners with access to product discounts, remote diagnostic tools, service and technical support and other resources and tools.

Motorola Solutions: Recent Cybersecurity Acquisitions

Along with Openpath, Motorola Solutions in 2020 acquired two MSSP- and cybersecurity-focused businesses for $32 million and $40 million, respectively. Motorola Solutions did not disclose the names of the acquisitions in its SEC filing -- but it's a safe bet the deals involved buying Delta Risk and LunarLine.

Motorola Solutions provides mission-critical services, software, video and analytics backed by land mobile radio communications, the company said. It has installed 13,000 networks and supports 100,000 customers globally.
