When it comes to the preparation for a cybersecurity incident, tabletop exercises have been the gold standard. But is it possible to do better?

Table tops can lack the immersive and interactive elements to fully engage participates and simulate real-world scenarios.

MSSP Alert Live speaker Bob Miller will help remedy that with his use of an online multiplayer incident response game. Miller, chief operating officer of Global Data Systems, a Top 250 MSSP, says learning via gaming is a powerful tool for preparing for cybersecurity incidents by fostering collaboration and introducing situations novel to these exercises.

Game Mimics Pressure of an Actual Cyber Incident

Miller will showcase this at MSSP Alert Live, Oct. 14-16 in Austin, Texas. In his session Enhancing Incident Response Preparedness Through Collaborative Online Multiplayer Gaming, participants will:

  • Learn why incident response planning and exercise are so critical
  • Discuss the impact gamification can have on engagement in the incident response education process
  • See how multi-player online incident response games can closely mimic the pressure and stress of an actual cyber incident.

Miller’s industry agnostic game offers players in an interactive, role-based incident response experience, as they assume various roles within an organization, such as CEO, chief financial offer and technical leads. Players will work together to allocate resources, prioritize tasks and make critical decisions in response to a simulated attack.

Throughout the game, participants discuss key aspects of incident response, including:

  • The importance of well-documented procedures
  • Challenges of resource allocation
  • The critical role of communication during a crisis

The interactive nature of the game encourages active participation, knowledge sharing, and the development of problem-solving skills. Players will gain valuable insights into the complexities of incident response and develop a deeper understanding of their roles and responsibilities within their respective incident response teams.

Miller’s session will also:

  • Explore the benefits of applying online multiplayer gaming for cybersecurity preparedness
  • Discuss best practices for designing and implementing such games
  • Provide insights into how organizations can integrate this approach into their existing incident response training programs
