How many security tools is too many? That's hard to gauge, and it may differ for every organization. But it's clear that as the number of solutions increases, so does complexity. And that has an inverse relationship with positive business outcomes.

New global research from the IBM Institute for Business Value (IBV) and Palo Alto Networks found that surveyed organizations are facing security complexity challenges -- and no wonder. They juggle an average of 83 different security solutions from 29 vendors.

A platform approach may help, the research suggested.

The research shows seven out of 10 respondents with a high degree of security platformization report their cybersecurity investments have helped business outcomes such as operational efficiencies and revenue generation.
