NetApp Advances Cybersecurity at the Storage Layer

SaaS and cybercrime

NetApp has introduced new cybersecurity capabilities aimed at helping organizations strengthen their data protection strategies by embedding security deeper into the storage layer. As cyberattacks become increasingly automated and quantum computing edges closer to mainstream viability, enterprises must address vulnerabilities across all layers of their IT environments—including primary storage. While much of cybersecurity has traditionally focused on network and endpoint defenses, storage infrastructure represents a critical last line of defense for sensitive data. NetApp’s latest updates extend security beyond backup and recovery, positioning storage itself as an active participant in threat detection, resilience, and response.

Strengthening Storage Against Emerging Threats

NetApp’s expanded security features protect data against both current and emerging risks, including threats powered by quantum computing. By embedding post-quantum cryptography into its storage portfolio, NetApp enables customers to secure file and block workloads using NIST-standardized encryption algorithms, helping ensure their data remains protected against future decryption threats. At the same time, updates to NetApp BlueXP ransomware protection offer more granular defenses. Enhancements include ransomware-specific role-based access controls, giving security teams more precise management over permissions, and extending protection across native cloud workloads—an increasingly important focus as hybrid environments grow more complex.

Simplifying Backup, Recovery, and Resiliency

NetApp is also refining its BlueXP backup and recovery services to streamline cyber-resiliency efforts. With a redesigned user interface and expanded workload support—including Microsoft SQL Server, VMware, and Kubernetes—enterprises can more easily implement a 3-2-1 data protection strategy, ensuring data is duplicated and stored securely across multiple environments. Recognizing that technology alone is not enough, NetApp is expanding its professional services to help customers assess and harden their security posture. These services focus on enabling and optimizing NetApp’s built-in security features, supporting proactive risk reduction efforts.
