DDoS Mitigation Services: Partnerships Becoming the Norm?

Distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks are evolving, and many DDoS protection services providers are forming partnerships to support global organizations – a trend that MSSPs need to watch.

For example, cybersecurity and application delivery solutions provider Radware this week announced a partnership with TierPoint, a company that specializes in cloud computing, disaster recovery and other information technology and data center services.

Radware now will power TierPoint's Managed DDoS Defense service via the Radware Attack Mitigation Solution, according to a prepared statement.

In addition, global data center provider Telehouse this week started offering Verisign's DDoS Protection Services to Telehouse customers via a reseller relationship with KDDI, Telehouse's parent company.

With this partnership, Telehouse finance and enterprise customers and cloud and content service providers can protect their critical assets and reduce the risk of DDoS attacks, Telehouse said in a company statement.

What Is the Impetus for DDoS Partnerships?

To better understand the impetus for DDoS partnerships, let's first consider the impact of DDoS attacks on organizations around the world.

The "Worldwide DDoS Attacks & Cyber Insights Research Report," a recent survey of 1,010 directors, managers and C-suite executives conducted by information services and analytics provider Neustar, highlighted the following DDoS attack trends:

  • DDoS attacks are getting bigger and more expensive. Forty-five percent of DDoS attacks were more than 10 gigabits per second (Gbps), and 43 percent of organizations said they suffered an average revenue loss of at least $250,000 per hour due to a DDoS attack.
  • Cybercriminals are targeting all organizations, across all industries. Overall, 84 percent of organizations across all industries said they experienced a DDoS attack, and 86 percent stated they were hit more than once.
  • Advanced protection systems are needed. Ninety-nine percent of organizations said they have DDoS protection in place, 90 percent are investing more in DDoS protection than they did one year earlier and 36 percent think they should be investing even more. 

Aligning for Success?

Partnerships now enable DDoS protection services providers to work together and fulfill the cybersecurity needs of organizations of all sizes and across all industries. As such, DDoS partnerships may become more common over the next few years, driven in large part by the rising demand for DDoS protection services worldwide.

The global DDoS protection services market could be worth approximately $2.16 billion by 2021, up from $824.4 million in 2016, research firm MarketsandMarkets noted.

Also, MarketsandMarkets has estimated the global DDoS protection services segment will expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 21.3 percent between 2016 and 2021, according to a prepared statement.
