Microsoft has acquired Internet of Things (IoT) security company ReFirm Labs, which develops software tools for device vulnerability management and firmware security analysis.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. But this was likely a small, strategic, tuck-in move. The evidence: ReFirm Labs of Fulton, Maryland, has roughly a dozen employees, according to LinkedIn, and raised $3.5 million in funding as of October 2019, according to Technical.ly.
David Weston, Microsoft's director of enterprise and OS security, announced the ReFirm Labs acquisition in a blog post. Describing the deal, he wrote:
"Microsoft believes that firmware is not a future threat, but an imperative to secure now as more devices flood the market and expand the available attack surface. We are committed to helping customers protect from these sophisticated threats now and in the future, which is why we’re announcing that we have acquired ReFirm Labs."
