Legislation - IoT Device Security: A bill moving forward in the Oregon Legislature would require Internet of Things (IoT) devices to have “reasonable” security features to guard against hacking and protect owners’ privacy. It echoes a similar bill that won approval from California lawmakers last September, GovTech reports.

9. Financial Results - Check Point: The security company says total revenue was $472 million in Q1 2019, up 4 percent from the corresponding quarter last year. Net income was $180 million, compared to $187 million for Q1 2018. The profits beat Wall Street's expectations but shares slide about 6 percent amid concerns about product and license revenue, according to SeekingAlpha.

7. WiFi Vulnerabilities: The Department of Homeland Security has issued a warning about Broadcom WiFi chipset driver vulnerabilities.

6. Penetration Testing: BitDam has launched a free data security penetration testing (PenTest) tool.

5. SOC as a Service - Compliance: Arctic Wolf Networks (AWN), a security operations center (SOC)-as-a-service company, has earned ISO 27001 certification. The certification is an international standard outlining best practices for information security management systems.

4. Government Contract - Bids Wanted: The Health and Human Services Department is competing a follow-on contract worth as much as $347 million to continue implementing the federal employee and contractor identification, authentication, and cybersecurity standards outlined in the Homeland Security Presidential Directive-12 (HSPD-12). Proposals are due May 15, Bloomberg Government reports.

3. Government Cybersecurity - Top 100 MSSP: Accenture, a Top 100 MSSP, has launched a Federal Cyber Center in San Antonio, Texas.

2. Talent: Bishop Fox, a private professional services firm focused on offensive security testing, has hired Dun and Bradstreet veteran Jon Rose as vice president of Managed Security Services (MSS). Rose will lead the strategic development and delivery of the firm's new managed services offerings.
