The CRO of a Master MSSP Says Detection and Response Services Are the Key to Growth

We recently sat down with Stephan Tallent for a post on our blog. Stephan is the CRO of High Wire Networks, a thriving master MSSP that delivers end-to-end managed cybersecurity services globally, through MSP partners.

Their managed services include extended detection and response, automated orchestration and remediation, and vulnerability scanning. So, needless to say, Stephan has a valuable perspective on the managed security services industry.

To follow are a few of the things he told us.

Opportunities for Growth Are Changing

The MSSP landscape has changed, says Stephan. MSSPs’ bread and butter has traditionally been security asset management. However, MSSPs must now perform detection and response functions to remain relevant, which goes beyond just deploying and managing security assets.

In order for MSSPs to thrive in an increasingly competitive landscape, they need to be able to offer more advanced detection and response services. This requires the use of technology like SOAR.

The growth rate for detection and response is estimated to be around 18-20%, while the growth rate for security asset management is somewhere around 12%. Therefore, in order for MSSPs to really thrive in an increasingly competitive landscape, they need to focus less on providing security asset management, which is perceived to add less value to an end customer's security posture, and more on leaning forward with detection and response services.

High Wire Networks Leverages Technology to Provide Detection and Response

So, if detection and response services are where the growth is for MSSPs, how is High Wire Networks putting that into action? Stephan told us that they have implemented incident response automation into Overwatch, their managed cybersecurity business unit. They’re offering advanced, real-time response actions across customers’ attack surfaces, including as part of a managed extended detection and response (MXDR) service.

High Wire Networks is using technology to enable these services and improve their internal capacities. Better alert triage has reduced the number of alerts they need to investigate and has also reduced the busywork that can lead to increased overhead. They are able to create incident response playbooks to respond to the threats they see in one environment, and then roll that out to all their customers.

Stephan says that being able to automate response actions across lots of different tools has dramatically improved High Wire Networks’ services, while reducing the cost of delivering those services.
