Amazon Web Services (AWS) has released Internet of Things (IoT) Device Defender, a security management service designed to simplify the process of establishing and auditing best practices within AWS IoT environments.
IoT Device Defender automates the security assessment of AWS cloud configurations and IoT device fleets, according to AWS. By doing so, IoT Device Defender helps organizations manage security issues before they impact production.
How Does IoT Device Defender Work?
IoT Device Defender works in conjunction with the AWS IoT Core managed cloud platform and AWS IoT Device Management service, AWS stated. It introduces security issues during the development and deployment of IoT applications, audits IoT configurations and provides continuous monitoring of security metrics from IoT devices.
In addition, IoT Device Defender identifies attack vectors applicable to an organization's IoT devices, according to AWS. It also triggers remote device operations such as revoking user permissions or rebooting and publishes security alerts to AWS IoT Console, Amazon CloudWatch and Amazon SNS.
IoT Device Defender is available in the US East (N. Virginia), US West (Oregon), US East (Ohio), EU (Ireland), EU (Frankfurt), EU (London), Asia Pacific (Tokyo), Asia Pacific (Singapore), Asia Pacific (Sydney) and Asia Pacific (Seoul) regions. Service pricing for audits is per device, per month, and pricing for monitored data points is per data point.
Global IoT Security Market Is Growing
IoT Device Defender is one of several managed services that could drive the growth of the global IoT security market.
Worldwide IoT security spending is projected to increase 28 percent between 2017 and 2018 and total $1.5 billion this year, according to technology research firm Gartner. The push to comply with critical infrastructure protection (CIP) mandates is one of the leading factors that could accelerate this market's growth.
MSSPs and other technology providers are capitalizing on the rising demand for IoT security solutions, too.
Mocana, an IoT security solutions provider, in April launched the TrustCenter managed security platform for industrial control systems (ICS) and IoT devices. TrustCenter automates device onboarding, enrollment and over-the-air (OTA) updates for ICS and IoT devices.
Furthermore, MSSP CyFlare in November partnered with Phoenix-based value-added reseller (VAR) Solution Synergy. The companies together provide a managed IoT security solution to healthcare organizations.
