Denmark-based Keepit, a cloud-native data protection and backup provider, has raised a $50 million funding round led by existing investor One Peak , and EIFO, the Export and Investment Fund of Denmark. This is Keepit’s third equity investment in the past four years, bringing total funds raised to approximately $90 million.

The company said the new investment will be directed towards expanding its go-to-market efforts and fueling continued product innovation. Just how much momentum does Keepit have? The company makes a big deal about being vendor-independent – i.e. it is not affiliated with any particular hyperscaler or other software vendor. It says its solution already supports a broad range of enterprise customers and 5 million users globally.

In terms of go-to-market plans, Keepit says it plans to bolster its network of partners following this new funding round.

Today’s MSSP Update

1. That’s a prime opportunity for MSSPs and cybersecurity-focused MSPs. (source: SCMedia)

2. Fake U.S. Justice Dept. documents - Netskope Threat Labs is reporting a legitimate iTop Data Recover application side-loading a backdoor they’ve dubbed “Yokai,” that is targeting Thai Government officials with false documents from the United States Department of Justice. Researchers Nikhil Hedge and Jan Michael Alcantara’s threat hunting activities discovered a RAR file containing two LNK shortcut files labeled, “United States Department of Justice.pdf” and “Urgently, United States authorities as for international cooperation in criminal matters.docx” that when clicked triggers copying content from an alt data stream into decoy PDF and Word documents using esentutl to transfer malicious payloads.

3. Digital consolidation and cybersecurity - CyberRisk Alliance has partnered with think tank ICIT (The Institute for Critical Infrastructure Technology) for a new study and report on the security concerns caused by digital consolidation. IT pros and security practitioners identified concerns about cybersecurity, vendor lock-in and potential single points of failure when it comes to consolidation. More information is available in the report here.

4. Comments, please. NCIRP update - CISA (the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency) has published the draft National Cyber Incident Response Plan (NCIRP) Update  for public comment today on the Federal Register. This draft was created through the Joint Cyber Defense Collaborative (JCDC) and in close coordination with the Office of the National Cyber Director in an effort to address changes in policy and cyber operations since the initial plan was released in 2016. More information is available in this CISA blog post.

5. Protecting schools from cyberthreats - Zero-trust and zero-knowledge cybersecurity software provider Keeper has released a report about cybersecurity in and for schools. This global study highlights the growing cybersecurity challenges that threaten educational institutions, based on a survey of 6,000 parents and students across Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Indonesia, Japan, France, the UK, US and DACH regions.
